The Magnificent Dozen

I created The Magnificent Dozen to draw attention to twelve endangered animals as representatives of the many more whose survival is at risk. Using images of these animals in their natural habitats, I painted them on aluminum, seeking to capture both their majesty and the sadness of a world that is becoming increasingly dangerous for them. Many of these magnificent species were here long before us. Yet today, they are disappearing because of what we humans have done to their world: destroying their habitats, poisoning their land and water, hunting them for profit, and altering the climate on which their survival depends.

Each painting incorporates marks and imagery connected to the particular human actions threatening that species. And yet, despite the pain, the terrible conditions, and the dangers we have imposed upon them, they remain proud and unbroken. Their dignity survives even when their habitats do not.

The Animal Kingdom is the crown jewel of creation. Across civilizations and religions, animals have inspired us, taught us, and symbolized the qualities we aspire to embody. Yet we are destroying the very habitats in which they have lived for millennia.

There will be no do-overs.

This is not simply a tragedy for animals. It is a reflection of what we are doing to our own planet.

If we allow these species to disappear, our children and future generations will inherit a poorer, diminished world—one where they may know these magnificent creatures only through images, stories, or zoos.

We are the custodians of this Earth. We have created the danger. We have the responsibility—and the power—to change it.

The time to act is now.
